The Great Lakes Trading Network (GLTN) will promote market-based trading programs as well as explore pilot projects that employ a "multiple-markets approach" to simultaneously achieve a variety of ecosystem benefits (i.e. water and air quality improvements, carbon sequestration, habitat enhancement). This project has three components: 1) six months of continued operational support for the GLTN, 2) conduct market research and business model development for the GLTN, including a feasibility analysis and valuation of potential ecosystem benefits of the multiple-markets approach, and 3) incorporate the GLTN as a not-for-profit organization. The applicants envision this project to be the first phase of a three-phase effort. Phase II is expected to be the implementation of pilot demonstration projects to test the viability of the multiple-markets approach. The final phase is expected to result in a self-sustaining GLTN.
