This team identified international shipping patterns in the Great Lakes and created a plan to highlight the environmental impacts of industry decisions, working with shippers, customers, scientists and others. The team built a risk analysis and management tool that allows companies to identify and manage the ecological impacts of their shipping choices, including ballast water discharges, bilge water releases, air emissions, and the leaching of hull coatings. This project introduced the EMS approach to carriers, shippers and others; identified key actors; and informed a subsequent request for proposals from the Great Lakes Protection Fund.
